Have You Noticed These Common Exterior Painting Problems Lately?

The exterior look of your house or commercial space is extremely important since it is the first thing that people notice when they are either visiting you or even passing by. The choice of color combination speaks a volume about your personality and taste. We all know that no paint lasts forever, and if it has been a few years since you have got your exterior walls painted, don’t be surprised if you start noticing a few issues cropping up.

Listed below are usual exterior paint issues and what usually causes them.

1.  Bubble-like texture: Have you noticed peculiar bubbles appearing from nowhere on your wood sidings and trims? These are called blisters. More often than not the paint blistering forms when the paint is exposed to harsh, direct sunlight or when lack of proper ventilation causes the house moisture to escape through the walls. To resolve this problem, the blistered paint has to be scraped off completely and the wall needs to be scrubbed softly with the sandpaper before the exterior painting contractor repaints it.

2. Cracks: Do you notice some fine vein-like lines running through your exterior walls? On closer look, you will realize these are nothing but cracks. This typically happens when you don’t wait for the first coat of paint to dry well, and proceed with the application of another.

3. Chalky residue: When you lean on the wall, do you notice chalky powder sticking to your clothes? This indicates that your paint is wearing off, leaving powdery residue behind. While it is common for all paints to leave some amount of chalky residue as it starts getting old, if it is happening excessively, then this means inferior quality paint was used.

4. Paint Peeling: This is another commonly observed exterior paint issue. It is caused due to poor adhesion, trapped moisture, or the wall had dirt, stains, or was went when the paint was applied. Wall blistering also eventually develops into peeling.

5. Mildew on walls: Did your eyes meet a patch of greenish-brown splotchy spots in one corner? This is nothing but mildew, a fungus that thrives on the walls. Lack of direct sunlight, excessive moisture, or dampness creates a perfect environment for the fungus to grow rapidly. Apart from being unsightly, mildew can cause an obnoxious odor and is not good for health. You can tackle this problem by cleaning the wall with a household bleaching solution.

6. Salty deposits: Are your painted walls exposing crusty salt deposits? This is another common problem that’s called Mottling. This happens when the salt from the bricks or the concrete dissolves in water, and when the water evaporates, the salt leaches onto the surface. Common causes for salty deposits are excessive humidity due to poor waterproofing, inappropriately preparing the surface before painting, and gaps in the masonry walls. This problem may require you to waterproof the outside part of your walls.

These exterior paint problems shouldn’t be ignored and some of these problems necessitate a whole new paint job. Get in touch with a professional painting contractor in CT to seek expert advice.
