Asphalt roof shingles

Asphalt roof shingles are the most widely used roofing material in North America, and for good reason. They are manufactured in numerous colors and styles, and are meant to preserve your home for decades of weathering with basic maintenance.

Strip shingles, dimensional shingles, and luxury shingles are the 3 main types of asphalt roofing shingles available these days. To choose the best roofing shingle for your home, you must first know about each type of shingle.

Strip shingles, often known as 3-tab shingles, are the oldest and most basic asphalt shingles. They are built of a single sheet of asphalt and have a relatively flat surface, giving them a slate appearance. Because they are formed from a single layer, they are lighter and less expensive than other asphalt shingles. Strip shingles are most widely utilized today by construction companies who build low-cost homes or individuals who are replacing roofing shingles on existing homes.

Dimensional Shingles

Shingles made of two layers that are adhered together are commonly known as dimensional shingles, or laminated roofing or architectural roofing, for their appearance. The bottom layer is exposed because the shingles have been randomly shaved. This gives your roof a three-dimensional appearance.

Dimensional shingles provide a high level of durability. Featuring multi-dimensional texture and look, these shingles have a 30-year lifespan. But the upfront cost of dimensional asphalt shingles is more than that of 3-tab asphalt shingles.

Luxury Shingles

Luxury shingles are made to look like authentic slate and cedar shake roofs at a fraction of the price. Shakes and slate are both expensive to buy and difficult to install. Slate roofs can cost up to ten times more than architectural laminate shingles.

Extra layers of luxury shingles add to the weight. They can weigh up to twice as much per square as standard 3-tab shingles. Besides being shingle "heavyweights" that provide superior weather resistance, luxury shingles are visually stunning, displaying the best quality, coloration, and dimensionality.
